Spanish-Cali Splendour

January 16, 2014

41 Ocean Restaurant

When ultra-glam Old Hollywood-inspired 41 Ocean debuted back in April, our dreams of sipping martinis beyond the velvet rope were soon dashed as we realised the venue would in fact be operating as a $2,000-a-year private members club. It wasn’t until November that our hope was restored with the announcement of an offshoot restaurant, located directly next door in the old Bamboo Izakaya space, and blessedly welcoming of non-members too. Hurrah!

Like its clubby counterpart, the cavernous restaurant is also a vision – designer Matt Winter’s vision to be exact – of vintage Spanish-Cali splendour, with rustic, salvaged-wood furniture, intricately-painted frescoes, 1930s wrought-iron chandeliers, and richly-hued Persian rugs. Despite its throwback style, the restaurant’s flavour is oh-so-now, with Jimmy Martinez’s lunch and dinner menus highlighting New American fare including a raw bar and ceviches, king crab tamale and kale and endive salads, beef cheek and swordfish tacos, and the signature 41 Burger (with provolone, gruyere, caramelised onion, watercress and peppercorn aioli) by day, with the addition of sea and land-focused mains including a delectable Tomahawk Chop with slow roasted tomato, bacon and cipolini onions by night. There are bottled and draught craft beers and New World wines to accompany, but we recommend sampling one of the slick cocktails like the Saladita (Del Maguey Vida, lime, honey, paprika) to really feel like a member of the club.
