Beauty in The Beast

November 09, 2015
The Beast

The moniker might sound a little unrefined, but you’d be hard pressed to find a space more fancifully floral than Sanlitun’s The Beast.

Growing from a Weibo micro-site, the blooming business has now opened a number of brick-and-mortar locations across Beijing, but by far the most beau is this bi-level flower fest complete with a cute cafe and a cache of handmade homewares.

Wreathed in industrial whitewashed bricks and cobblestone floors, the store is a colourful conservatory of exotic buyable blossoms. Just don’t assume you can pick whichever posies take your fancy, rather shoppers are invited to describe the “message” they’d like their bouquet to convey – and state who they’re for – and the artful arrangers will craft something sensationally suitable.

Rather give a gift that’ll last a little longer? This beastie also stocks a carefully curated selection of artisanal products ranging from house-label printed scarves and Mad et Len organic candles to Dodo jewellery and cushion covers by Brit designer Tom Dixon.

And when your appetite starts to sprout, you need only creep upstairs for Mariage Frères tea and decadent cream cakes in the cha-ming caff. Cuppa Rosie Lee? Not arf!
