Trash & Diamond
As the old adage goes, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, or in the case of Beijing’s first and only high-end thrift store, one woman’s trash is another woman’s diamond... Set up by self-confessed fashionista Fang Fang in artsy hangout Shuangjing, Trash & Diamond is a refreshing addition to a retail scene saturated with big-league stores, that carries a neat cache of second-hand (er shou) clothing and accessories. And we’re not talking moth-eaten cast-offs, but a tightly edited display of designer duds that look like they’ve barely seen the light of day.
The fitout, too, relies on upcycled materials like display tables made from colourful pressed cardboard and a ceiling covered in glass bottle chandeliers, that achieves a clean, elegant setting for Fang’s covetable stash. The constantly evolving lineup includes performance dresses (think Great Gatsby-esque gowns dripping with beads), garments from fashion shows, and accessories such as an embellished clutch and an immaculate pair of red leather brogues. Although shoppers were slow to catch on at first, the venture has now proved so successful (rock stars, models and stylists are among her clientele), that she’s opening a second store in Wudaokou this spring. So if you don’t mind nabbing designer duds a season late for easy-on-the-credit-card prices, this stylish thrift store is certainly worth a good rummage!
