After winning the 2013 Mercedes-Benz China Young Fashion Award and revealing his couture collection Cosmic Energy to widespread acclaim in Paris S/S 2014, front row fashion editors soon sat up and took note of up-and-coming Chinese fashion designer, Simon Gao. It then came as no surprise that Beijing’s prestigious department store Galeries Lafayette quickly jumped at the chance to sign him up for their first local collaboration, The Beijing Labo. But really sealing his reputation as this year’s fashion must-grab was his A/W 2014 London show, which not only closed the curtain on Fashion Week, but attracted quite the fashionista following from Georgia May Jagger to Daisy Lowe.
If you haven’t already tottered down to Galeries Lafayette for a peek at his latest collection, now is almost certainly the time do so as his minimalist women’s apparel (like chic, form-fitting high-waist skirts and soft, cashmere sweaters) won’t be around for long. Currently of particular note are his Han Dynasty-inspired designs, including delicate, sheer tunics, and elegant, full-length satin dresses in which splashes of red and gold add some contrast to his usual palette of grey, black and white. But what we’re really looking forward to is next season’s range of neutral hued sport-luxe pieces in leather, fur and cashmere, like his oversized embellished white roll neck and elegant grey wrap cashmere coat. China chic!
