Paper Trail

October 10, 2016
Book Design Shop
Whether you’re a glossy mag glutton or a coffee-table book buff, you simply won’t be-leaf the selection of small-run indie publications, niche zines, arty tomes, and savvy accessories on display at this temple of all things print. A specialist boutique hidden in a small hutong courtyard, Book Design Shop is the brainchild of Tony Li, formerly of GQ Taiwan.

A true labour of love, many of the titles have been selected and hand-imported by the man himself. Browse the best of China’s up-and-coming indie design mags or hard-to-find Japanese photo books, as well as international architecture, illustration and lifestyle publications, alongside a variety of tightly curated global homewares, bags, T-shirts and stationery. Great gifts (for yourself or others) include copies of New York and Berlin-based ‘post-tourism’ journal The Travel Almanac, geared towards cultured globetrotters, urban rag Concrete Flux and hipster flickster B.

The decor is simple, with pared-back wooden shelves and tables, white walls and oversized industrial pendants (plus cute potted plants adding a hint of on-trend living green). As well as curating a passionate edit of his favourite titles, Li partners with local creatives, helping to publish, exhibit and sell the work of Beijing’s artists and designers. The rise of digital is rolled back here, but fret not, there’s a handy online store too (goodsmedia.com). Bridget Jones and Game of Thrones fans should look elsewhere – you’ll find no mainstream lit in this cerebral little nook!
