Brews & Booze

January 26, 2015
Ocean Grounds

In a city of cha-ficionados, coffeehouse Ocean Grounds still managed to make a name for itself as one of Beijing’s hottest spots to kick back and pore over a single-origin brew. So no doubt many a caffeine addict experienced some serious withdrawals when owner Jim Lee shuttered the store in 2013. However, Lee soon regained his senses and just a year later, flung open the doors to a new incarnation of Ocean Grounds’ in the Hai Long Plaza shopping mall, which – and here’s the best bit – transforms into a coffee-centric cocktail bar at night.

By day, the offerings in its brightly lit space of dark wood table-tops, buttery leather tub chairs and weathered herringbone walls include a seasonal list of direct-trade cups, brewed with quality beans coming in from Colombia, Papua New Guinea and Sumatra, plus some unusual blends, such as the agave latte and the honeycomb cappuccino which have proven extremely popular with regulars. Then, when the clock strikes seven, bartender Paul Hsu (formerly of JC Lounge) whips out his cocktail shaker to prepare from a list of eight signature mixes with an emphasis on tea- and coffee-infused spirits, like the Chase Walker blended with rum, bourbon, cinnamon and joe. How’s that for jav-aah?
