Horsing Around

September 07, 2015
British Polo Day

Does your idea of a jolly good romp involve a spot of pony play? Well, we have some simply spiffing news, and it comes (ahem) straight from the horse’s mouth…

Yes, it’s that time of year again, when the city’s society figures, sporting nuts and all-round bon vivants saddle up for a bit of mallet merriment. We are talking, of course, about the fifth annual installment of British Polo Day which is all set to bowl into Beijing’s Tang Polo Club in mid-September.

If you want to be a part of all the on- and off-field fun, first you’ll need to nab your tickets (aka ‘invitations’) online. Once all the formalities are in order, a ride over to the green will be arranged – no, not on Seabiscuit but rather in a chauffeur-driven Land Rover.

Before the mares, there’s pedals with a bicycle polo exhibition match. Then, following the two-wheeled warm up, comes the main event, with the British Exiles (featuring top shots George Meyrick, Chevy Beh and Miguel Diaz) taking on the home side in a few fast-paced and friendly chukkers – served up with a tall flute of Taitti, naturally.

Post-match, guests can take traditional afternoon tea and sharpen their own ball skills playing croquet, or retire to the bar for a wee dram of Royal Salute. Then, in the evening the real revelries begin with an Argentinian asado afterparty. So go on, tack up and trot over!
