Dexterous Design

Fnji

Confucius once said, ‘Everything has its beauty, but not everyone sees it’. However, not far from the great philosopher’s temple in Guozijian, there lies a boutique that might just prove the storied sage wrong. For just one look at exquisite furniture and design trove Fnji (pronounced ‘fanji’) reveals a beauty for all to see.

Owned by gimlet-eyed industrial designer Gu Qi Gao, Fnji occupies a painstakingly restored courtyard home. The unifying element that connects everything on display – from Chinese and Japanese homeware to contempo wooden tables, chairs and beds designed by Gu Qi – is an elevated simplicity, somewhat Scandi in its aesthetic but undeniably Chinese in its design and craftsmanship.

Made from dark but lightweight American walnut or pale but heavy American ash, every piece has been lovingly handcrafted at the brand’s Shunyi workshop and finished to Gu Qi’s exacting standards.

For those keen to try before they buy, there’s a cafe inside the boutique where you can make yourself comfortable on a pew or two, while enjoying a peppy little java jolt and marvelling at the meaning given to the modern Chinese designs on display. Fn-tastic!
