Mr Gentleman
Slinking beneath the shadows of Chaoyang’s foreign embassies, a mere tankard’s toss from the bars and boutiques of Sanlitun, are some of Beijing’s slickest sirs. Not content with cutting from the same cloth as their peers, they have shunned fashion’s big guns in favour of indie frontrunners and, were you to surreptitiously sneak a peek at the labels stitched to their seams, you’d see ‘Mr Gentleman’ appear again and again.
The snappy Nippon menswear brand imbibes all that’s sartorially stellar about its spiffy citizens, and weaves that essence of effortlessness into every garm. Collections encompass looks that range from Wilde-esque dandy abandon to streetwear that wouldn’t look amiss on a Beastie Boy, circa 1990. Think fitted velvet blazers teamed with cropped pleated pants; mustard-hued workman jackets with shearling detailing and stone-wash skinnies; or slogan scarves with oversized parkas and tight-fit joggers.
And it’s not just the duds that are dapper. The store itself earns style points for clean, minimalist interiors, where marble, white wainscot and warehouse-style illuminations allow the wears to do the talking.
As well as peddling its own brand of rakish raiment, the sharp shop also sells items from Outdoor Products – accessories for adventurous souls – and even its own ‘Gentleman’s Blend’ of beans for a proper cuppa. Now, how’s that for Mr Right?
