Although China’s retail scene is pulling in some of the biggest names in fashion from around the world, the country’s own design industry is still very much in its infancy, and it’s for precisely this reason that efforts are being focussed on giving local, young talent a fashion foot-up. The Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology (BIFT), who have recently created a platform for their most talented students, is no exception: currently hosting 22 emerging designers at the Aegean Shopping Center, their new store BIFT Works curates, displays and offers up for sale innovative items of clothing, jewellery and accessories.
Some of these pieces have been lovingly crafted as one-off buys, and although there is an emphasis on clothing, there’s also an astounding variety of things to choose from such as hand-wrought leather bags, silver rings, painted iPhone cases, and embroidered cushions. Look out for Li Shuang’s range in Japanese minimalist-inspired wool winter coats, Liang Yinqi’s array of colourful bow ties (which have already been selling like hot cakes), and Hu Yayun’s summery cotton top and skirt ensembles in feminine light blues and pinks. In case you have any questions while browsing, the store is rather handily run by the students themselves – and who knows, you might just bump into the next big thing!
