Fashion Revolution

March 24, 2014
Atelier Rouge Pékin

Traditional and often reverential portraits of Chairman Mao are still to be seen everywhere in contemporary China, but none are quite so eye-catching as fashion label Atelier Rouge Pékin’s daring depiction of a young Mao cheekily winking ringed in a flourish of kitch flowers. This bold cultural-cum-fashion statement is the image central to the brand’s inaugural his-and-hers collection Cultural Evolution, launched late last year by Chinese designer PJ (Panjie) and French entrepreneur Maxime Bureau.

Along with its team of Beijing-based CAFA (China Central Academy of Fine Arts) designers, ARP offers an exquisitely crafted collection of both ready-to-wear clothing and hand-crafted gold and silver jewellery, which manages to marry traditional Chinese style, like minimal-cut Mao jackets and other colourful peasant patterns, with a sassy dose of modern culture, such as Mao’s winking image printed on a line of tees. Central to the label’s aesthetic are clean lines and androgynous silhouettes, which can be seen in the women’s form-fitting slit skirt and three quarter-length smoking pants, as well as men’s overcoats made from Mongolia-sourced cashmere, and lined with the label’s signature red peony pattern. Add to that a dash of solid gold and silver moulded to China’s iconic five-pointed star in brooch, cufflink and necklace designs and you’ve got a total style revolution!
