Beijing’s buzzy Sanlitun nabe in Chaoyang District was once the capital’s diplomatic quarter; these days it’s more likely to entertain shoppers hunting for international labels and revellers heading for the infamous Bar Street. But beyond the detox spas and retox bars, sleek malls and chain stores, the odd interesting indie venture beckons.
 
China may love luxury, but its tastemaker youths are increasingly mixing global and local looks with haute fashion and street sass. Enter, quirksome Anchoret (an old English word for ‘hermit’), founded in 2011 by style-savvy husband-and-wife team Onkit Wong and Kayuet Chau to sway sartorialists away from the ubiquitous big brands with on-trend, high-end, luxuriant, alternative design.

The fashionista-beloved boutique has recently moved to sleek, new archi-appointed digs in a pretty tree-lined backstreet in Sanlitun, where it maintains a cutting edge stock of around 20 now names, from the established (think Yohji Yamamoto and Rick Owens) to the cult (like up-and-comers Guidi, Taichi Murakami, Toogood and Vetements). 

Artisanal selections – by designers, artists and craftsmen – celebrate unusual, quality items you won’t find in the mall, including men and women’s RTW, shoes, jewellery, home accessories, fragrances and publications. Drop your anchor and surrender to this wave of sartorial deliciousness...
