Blue Note Jazz Club
Calling all cool cats! One of New York's finest jazz clubs has debuted in Beijing, inside the Qianmen 23 complex in Dongcheng. The Chinese capital’s jazz scene is small but growing, attracting a young audience, keen to hear both experienced overseas and emerging local talents. The arrival of the renowned Blue Note is fuelling the expansion, with huge international names invited to play regularly, including the inimitable Chick Corea this September.
Alongside the Chick Corea Trio, featuring Avishai Cohen and Marcus Gilmore, playing on 13 September, other upcoming performers include The Stanley Clarke Band, The Manhattan Transfer and Jane Monheit. The original Greenwich Village Blue Note was founded by Danny Bensusan in 1981, and has hosted icons including Dizzy Gillespie, Sarah Vaughan, Stevie Wonder, Tony Bennett and Quincy Jones… so you can expect plenty more where that came from.
But it’s not just about the beats, great eats are to be had too… choose between table tickets for a fancy dinner with cocktails, or slip into a side/bar seat for a more low-key affair. Southern-style faves are the order of the day, with dishes spanning fried chicken wings, teriyaki pork ribs, pan-fried seabass, suckling pig, and New Orleans jambalaya. Champagne will keep the evening bubbling along nicely, or there’s Euro, Aus and NZ wines, beers and cocktails, including the famous Blue Note. Nice.
