Quaff N' Puff

November 07, 2013
Whisgars

As astute wordsmiths can probably tell from the name, new Bangkok lounge Whisgars offers a clever mix of premium whiskey and cigars – but it’s the nightspot’s independent operation and non-traditional focus that has it standing out from the Thai capital’s burgeoning quaff and puff set. Unlike its numerous hotel-based counterparts, Whisgars is set behind beloved Italian stalwart Giusto on Sukhumvit’s happening Soi 23, and seeks to update classic boy’s club looks with edgy exposed brick, polished concrete and modern down-lighting in addition to the requisite tufted brown leather seating.

When most think cigars, they immediately think Cuba – but that is where Whisgars truly defines itself: with its specific focus on 4 major brands hailing from outside the most well-known but – according to the team – most overrated cigar-producing country. Mild, medium and full-bodied stogies from Nicaraguan label Perdomo, as well as El Primer Mundo, Pinar Del Rio and EP Carrillo from the Dominican Republic make up the sizable boutique range, while the whiskey selection spans all noted regions of Scotland plus a concise list of Japanese blends including 10 year-old Suntory Hibiki and 12 year-old Hakushu.

Light bites and more substantial meals come from Giusto’s kitchen next door, so order seared tuna with avocado mousse or a delectable mini burger and settle if for a night of sipping and toking, Whisgars style.
