Eighties Flashback

December 09, 2013

Upon entering StEREO Bar, the funky new addition to the Ekkamai night scene, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d been sucked into the digital world to undertake a series of gladiatorial challenges (Gah! Where’s my trusty security software?), as the bar’s out-of-this-world neon lighting, eighties wall graphics and geometric shapes are all rather reminiscent of science fiction cult classic TRON. However, owner John Nattapong insists this neon beat-box is more than just a filmic homage, StEREO is already emerging as one of Bangkok’s most exciting indie music venues.

Accordingly, the bar hosts regular live gigs, DJ sets, and serves up cocktails named after indie anthems such as ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ and ‘Creep,’ alongside a solid selection of transcontinental hops. Flashy themes aside, the food is thankfully simple, including hearty Thai fare like sour pork ribs, spicy seafood and noodle salad, grilled pork green curry or roasted duck red curry, along with the occasional western plate like penne alfredo and rib eye steak. Served all day long, any of the above can be enjoyed to the accompaniment of music… or if you prefer to hear yourself think while you eat, there’s a relatively peaceful beer garden out front.
