Treasure Chest

July 18, 2013

When it comes to buying vintage collectibles in Asia, few cities are more treasure-filled than Bangkok. In this city you’ll find, in a sea of other retailers, the blinking beacons of Incredible  with its exotic, one-off furniture and décor pieces, neighbouring sibling store Eligible and Soi 31’s Irresistible, and the vast, if somewhat daunting selection waiting to be unearthed in market behemoth Chatuchak.

But perhaps most unique of them all is Papaya, a rambling three-storey, 5,000sqm space packed to the rafters with a jumbled hoard of eclectic miscellanea spanning the quirky, the fantastic and the downright bizarre.

60s Deco furniture and fixtures sit alongside life-sized superhero figurines including Batman and Wolverine; vintage Vespas nestle next to keyboards, kitsch tasseled lamps and hanging egg chairs; old televisions sets and radios jostle for space with artwork, household knick knacks, gramophones and Astro Boy dolls.

Items are displayed sans price tags, and some are in fact not for sale, or available for rental only, so customers should take note of their items of interest as they go, plus their locations (finding your way back to them may prove rather difficult), then enquire with staff. But even if you’re not in the market for a 70s shop mannequin or typewriter, this unassuming suburban-warehouse-cum-time-warp-museum is worth a visit if just for a meander down memory lane. Happy hunting!
