From the moment you walk through the door into the bar and lounge at Napa on 26, there’s an unhurried and elegant air, a refinement that instantly puts you at ease. On you go into the masculine, understated dining room, with its wealth of warm woods, caramel-coloured wing chairs, perfect napery and warmly lit feature wall, and once seated, if New World, and in particular, Californian wines light your fire – meet your tinderbox. Napa on 26 lists (on iPad) over 200 wines, and easily the best collection of American Zinfandels, Syrahs and Cab Sauvs in the city.

Now, with all that rich, full-bodied, jammy fruitiness, you’re going to need something punchy on the plate, and William Schillinger’s European and Californian menu rounds up an admirable roster of desirable pairings from a chilled Wagyu beef tartare with grain mustard and soft poached quail egg, and an ample slab of US tenderloin with vibrant pepper sauce and intensely perfumed truffle mash, to a delectable butter-poached Boston lobster, creamy macaroni cheese, lobster broth and mascarpone gnochetti with coral oil. Leave space if you can for pistachio crème brulée with sour/sweet Griotte cherry sherbert, and bear in mind that if you feel spoilt for choice, there are handy, regular seasonal tasting menus, which can be wine paired. Oh, and don’t miss the excellent weekend brunch, but book ahead.
