Concert in the Park
Aah! Winter in Bangkok... a time of year when the temperature perceptibly drops to a comfortable 26-degree average and many forsake their air-conditioned enclaves in pursuit of the pleasantly cool outdoors. Thankfully the city boasts a smattering of green spots, the biggest of which is Lumpini Park – a lush expanse of lawns, ponds and palm trees. And to while away those blissful sunny evenings, the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra will pitch up at the bandstand on various Sundays throughout December, January and February. The line-up is relaxed – from folk and pop to classical – and can often change at the eleventh hour depending on which vocalist or conductor is available, but past scores have included the Danse Bacchanale by Saint-Saens, Tchaikovsky’s Waltz from Swan Lake, and the odd crooner classic in the lead up to Christmas, as well as the usual cameo from a James Bond soundtrack. The event is sponsored by Singha beer so icy bottles flow freely, while picnic-wise we recommend ordering in from fabulous food delivery service Birds in a Row (from the couple behind runaway success Seven Spoons who offer seasonal, organic fare such as shrimp and mango salsa soft tacos; spanakopita (spinach and feta cheese pie); and smashed squash, sage and walnut salad. Now all you need is a lovely fuzzy picnic rug!
