As the saying goes, there’s no rest for the wicked, and the team behind one of Thonglor’s hottest nightspots Mellow is no exception, having just launched a new branch of the trendy Italian diner in Crystal Park and now an entirely novel concept just across the soi. Set in a little-restored but nevertheless striking 3-storey shophouse, Badmotel is a painfully hip bar and nightclub replete with white-washed walls, neon lights, chunky wooden tables and fluorescent barstools, not to mention an extensive outdoor space including a rooftop overlooking Thonglor and a cheerful garden out back. But Badmotel is a cultural hub as much as it’s a watering hole, hosting as it does movie nights, retail pop ups, art shows from local and emerging artists, and daily live sets from Bangkok’s cutting edge DJs. Their cocktail fare is fiercely Thai and uses their own herb-infused spirits, among other local products – a case in point being Bad Company, mixed with a homemade ya dong (street liquor) and served with honey and pickled grape. Small food plates are also on the menu, varying from relatively standard bar fare like crab cakes, burgers, and grilled turmeric chicken skewers, to slightly more curious contenders like pots of steamed French mussels, smoked salmon dotted with Thai spices, or homemade poppadoms with fresh salsa. Bad it certainly isn’t!
