Time for Tea

November 14, 2016
Peace Oriental Teahouse
Following the devastating death of the Thai king, what could be better than slipping into this tranquil, zen little tearoom for an introspective moment? Japanese-inspired Peace Oriental serves Matcha for connoisseurs, alongside a superb selection of rare, natural, single-estate and award-winning teas.

Specialising in traditional oriental teas, this too-cool concept now boasts two branches, but we especially adore the minimal-sleek new space on Sukhumvit Soi 49. Favourite sips include super-balanced, energy-boosting Sencha, the most popular Japanese tea; smooth, mellow Houjicha, the all-time classic roasted green tea; Genmaicha, with its complex aroma of toasted grains and fresh green tea; and Gyokuro, rated as ‘the king of Japanese tea leaves’, its bluish-green leaves full of umami while avoiding bitterness.

Be sure to have a chat with the owner, Teerachai Limpaitoon, who has incredible knowledge of tea. He divides his carefully curated libations into three collections: Purist (available to drink in or take away, hot or iced); Idealist (served in trad tea sets, with a menu of 12 region-ranging oolongs); and Perfectionist (with white and aged teas).

Swing by to sample unusual brews, koicha cream (milk ice cream in thick Matcha) and other divine tea desserts. You can perch at the bar to chat to the staff and watch them work, or relax at a low table. The team prides itself on producing ‘tea for the heart’ that is heart-made.
