Alice’s Adventures in Bangkok

May 23, 2016
Rabbit Hole
Alice’s adventures in Wonderland took her down the rabbit hole, where she fell into a fantastical world full of kooky characters and magic potions. For similarly excellent adventures, seek out charming, recently launched Bangkok speakeasy Rabbit Hole, secreted away in a shophouse between Soi 5 and 7 in Thonglor (there’s no sign, just enter via the wooden door between the Japanese bar and ramen den).

Once inside the stylish three-storey space, you may not espy a white rabbit, but you’ll certainly discover a dim-lit marble bar plus perching, backed by a vertiginous wall of tipples in gleaming rose gold (the colour du jour). As well as generous first-floor bar seating, there’s an elegant secluded salon upstairs for intimate parties, with an extra bar, retro oil paintings and mood lighting. Add a cool house soundtrack, seriously good craft cocktails and the pretty peeps, and you’re in for a killer night.

Mixing your magic potions are two class-act bartenders (nicknamed Chacha and Yod), offering global spirits and classic-with-a-twist combinations. If the White Truffle Martini isn’t on your diet, then go for the refreshing Mad Hatter (how Alice), a long gin-based concoction including passion fruit, smoked tea, lime juice, soda, syrup and a dash of absinthe (the torch-dried orange garnish gives it its smoky seduction). There are no bar snacks, but expect buzzy beats; DJs spin their stuff four nights a week. Glam up and get down that hole...
