How to Survive the Hot Season

April 11, 2018

It’s little surprise that Thailand celebrates Songkran with a literal super-soaking – April is nothing short of sweltering. If you’re passing through the Thai capital this month and looking for ways to beat the heat, try one of these sure-fire winners, from mall hopping to wet n’ wild adventures.

Now, we’d be the first to suggest avoiding a mall, but scorching temps call for serious air con. When you want to shop without the heat, nip to interconnected high-end centres Emporium and EMQuartier, which between them house an array of Thai-made treats. Begin at Emporium with a browse of the indoor market crammed with handmade wood carvings, textiles, ceramics and whatnot that you’ll actually want to take home with you, then it’s a mere skip over the skybridge to EMQuartier. This swish, light n’ white bastion of retail stacks trending Thai fashion and lifestyle such as Asava’s sleek womenswear, and concept shop Another Story.

For a more cultural experience, bunker down inside the cool and contemporary Bangkok Art & Culture Centre, which stacks a slew of modern Thai art works along with rotating exhibitions by national and international talents. Exhibiting this month is Vasan Sitthiket’s ‘I Am You’, which showcases 100 of the artist’s vibrant pieces which play on various societal phenomenons. Post peruse, stop by the nifty gift shop for more made-in-Thailand treasures.

If you’d rather cool off the old fashioned way, glide over to Flow House, an urban beach club complete with simulated wave machine. Ideal for families, Ma and Pa can let budding Mick Fannings perfect their surf and bodyboarding skills, while you kick back with a cocktail and tasty fusion eats.

But if that all sounds too much of a schlep, simply shuffle your way down to The Peninsula's very own spa. This swoonsome, temperate haven of dark wood and batik textiles overlooking the Chao Phraya offers a vast menu Thai-inflected therapies and facials. If you’ve had too much time in the sun, opt for the illuminating P50 Enzyme Peel and Biomagic Brightening and Toning treatment – it promises to reveal a whole new you.
