Creative Concept Space

March 13, 2017
ChangChui
Multi-tasking is all the rage these days, and nowhere works harder than Bangkok’s buzziest new space ChangChui. Combining cultural diversions with edgy drinking and dining plus shopping distractions, it’s the one address you need for your little black book this year.

Thonburi gets a hip new hub or “creative village” with this hotly anticipated April launch, which includes an art gallery, library, theatre and a cinema that will accommodate performances and screenings by local talent, as well as design-led shopping stalls, a food market, and – most excitingly – a resto-bar from the revered Seven Spoons team. Plans include a vintage barber, music and bookstores, a museum, co-working space and greenhouse.

ChangChui is the brainchild of Thai designer and innovator Somchai Songwattana (of hit local fashion label Flynow), who makes glasses, a goatee and man-bun look good. When he acquired this former landfill site, he realised its potential, deciding to convert chaos into anarchic beauty (“chui” means unorganised or careless in Thai). The result is a hotchpotch of buildings, crafted from recycled teak window frames, shutters, corrugated iron and antique doors (think Bali’s Potato Head Beach Club).

Over 150 artists and designers came together to produce ChangChui, intended to unite older and younger generations in laidback collaboration. At the hangout’s heart is a decommissioned airplane, transformed into a luxe dining room and bar adorned with taxidermy animals. Ideal for high-flyers!
