A Taste of Summer

March 12, 2018

April and May are high summer in Thailand, when the mercury rarely dips below 35 degrees Celcius and savvy Bangkokians seek water, air con, or an escape to the beach. During hot season, many restaurants roll out speciality dishes, known for their cooling properties. Pull up a pew at one of these top eateries and feast away.

Bright, bold-hued Kalpapruek is a longstanding favourite among office workers and retailistas for its classic Thai food made with ingredients from the Royal Projects. The menu stars all-time hits like tom yum soup, pad Thai and chicken in pandan leaves, but keep an eye out for the daily specials, which introduce regional and summer dishes. Quench your thirst with a zingin’ housemade manao soda (lime soda) and save room for one of the delectable cakes to finish.

The vast riverside deck at The Never Ending Summer is the fashionable go-to in the cool season; but when the temperature rises, you might want to head inside the nostalgia-tinged dining room instead. Graze on refined comfort food, prepped in the open kitchen and washed down with an old Siam-inspired zesty cocktail.

On the opposite side of the river, the rustic-chic Err rocks a hip, laidback atmos and a passion for fermentation. The menu of street food-inspired dishes designed to share features charcoal-grilled meats and fish, as well as light curries, but it’s the refreshing Thai salads that really seal the deal at this time of year. Sustain your water levels with the yum polamai – their spicy fruit salad and one of the tropical Thai ‘tails, shaken or stirred with cane sugar and fresh fruits.

Paste has garnered numerous gongs, and a Michy star for its inventive interpretations of age-old recipes, and the elegant, cool-hued dining room in Gaysorn Village is the perfect retreat on a sizzling-hot day. Prettily plated dishes are light and flavoursome; choose one of the set menus or à la carte – the pla haeng tangmo is a novel take on the traditional summer fish n’ fruit dish, made with watermelon and salmon. Aroy!
