For almost 20 years now Osha has been the San Francisco go-to for top-notch regional Thai cuisine, today repping an impressive seven locations across the city. With such a triumphant feather in their cap, ebullient sister act Wassana Korkhieola and Lalita Souksamlane have returned to their original stomping ground, Thailand, to unveil a spangly new restaurant in Bangkok. However, realising they would have to up their game in the home of Thai cooking, this newest iteration boasts an unconventional twist – with the help of Iron Chef Thaninthorn Chantrawan, Osha Bangkok is bringing molecular Thai to the table.
One step into Osha’s palatial setting of high silver-gilded ceilings and generous smatterings of gold throughout (a stark contrast to the crisp white aesthetic of the San Fran chain) is enough to raise expectations of what’s to come on the plate. However, before your hopes are dashed, don’t be fooled by the simple, one might even say uninspiring names of the dishes. Squids & Salted Egg is an elevated rendition of calamari served with a salted duck egg yolk aioli, and Foie Gras sees the delicacy seared and seasoned with truffle salt and served with a tamarind reduction. The cocktail list has also been given a good old shake-up, with off-beat concoctions including the Hanuman Gin Fizz infused with rosemary and lemongrass. Welcome home, Osha!
