A. R. Sutton & Co. Engineers Siam
He bequeathed Thai tipplers the darkly Dickensian Iron Fairies, Bookshop Bar with its Escher-esque staircases, and garage-chic Bangkok Betty (not to mention toybox tearoom Mr Jones’ Orphanage), but now interiors savant Ashley Sutton has taken his steam-powered imaginings to even more fantastical realms with the eponymous A. R. Sutton & Co. Engineers Siam, a sultry, brass cog-adorned saloon in Sukhumvit offering fruit-infused vodka and top-shelf scotch amid sumptuous old world surrounds.
A maze of cast iron curves, coil-wire lighting and plush colonial furniture encased in a glasshouse entrance, the recently unveiled space is like the exotic pied-à-terre of an eccentric Victorian inventor with a penchant for fine drink – think house-made cinnamon-spiked Sailor Jerry Rum, aged Balvenie whisky, craft ales from across Asia and spirits brewed on-site in a micro-distillery that masquerades as an industrial-era time machine. Boozy bar treats like raw oysters, frites, charcuterie and even ice cream in flavours like wine, rum and fig are occasionally available, but even when the kitchen’s closed this imbibers’ emporium is still a feast for the eyes and ears with live chamber music on Wednesday nights and weekends. Who needs H. G. Wells when you’ve got A. R. Sutton?
