Boutique Beer Bar

May 19, 2014
Mikkeller Bangkok
Good old beer has always been the tipple of choice for Thai drinkers – unsurprising given the country’s unrelenting heat and humidity – but if you prefer a brew that’s a bit more sophisticated than a Singha served with ice, you’ll know options are scarce. Thankfully, Bangkok-bound aficionados can breathe a sigh of relief (followed by a thirst-quenching gulp of handcrafted hops), because now satisfying many a discerning palate is famed Danish micro-brewing brand Mikkeller, whose Bangkok flagship ‘beer bar’ is also its first presence in Asia.

Located in an airy, teal-hued house that’s just a tad out of the way, Mikkeller is also perhaps the only bar in Bangkok without a happy hour – but it’s worth a visit to sample the works of ‘gypsy’ master-brewer Mikkel Borg Bergsjø, whose global jaunts have inspired him to create limited batch brews in flavours as imaginative as chipotle and cherry. There are 30 beers on tap and yet more bottled varietals, so book a beer-sampling session in the climate-controlled private tasting room or snag a shady spot on the back lawn and while away an afternoon with a few Pils and a platter of local artisanal meats and cheeses. Chiyo!
