Crepes in the Country

May 12, 2014
La Creperie
Picture the loud, bustling, nonstop ‘Big Mango’ Bangkok – it’s about as far away as you can get from the idyllic French countryside, isn’t it? Though that remains true in terms of geographical distance, the Loire Valley may no longer seem so far in atmosphere, thanks to the just-opened La Creperie. Tucked away in the labyrinthine Sukhumvit Soi 39, the restaurant occupies an adorable standalone grey house surrounded on all sides by trees and shrubs, and promises to transport you miles away from hectic city life, and that’s before you’ve even stepped inside.

The interior offers up rustic charm and comfort quirk in spades, where wooden décor mixes with pops of colour like fresh-picked pink roses and canary yellow seat cushions, while the verdant garden boasts outdoor tables for sunny springtime lunching. The menu is short and sweet to match its simplistic vibe, with a lineup of buckwheat crêpes in classic variations both savoury (think emmental cheese, ham, and a sunny-side-up egg) and sweet (banana-caramel, nutella). For the adventurous there are options like the scallop crêpe with buttery leeks and asparagus, and there’s even a succinct selection of entrées for those in need of some variety, but for us, an order of the most iconic and simple of French crêpes and a perch in the lush garden are loveliest.
