Harrods Tea Room

March 17, 2014
The Best of British
London’s extravagant, iconic department store Harrods pulls in around 300,000 customers on a busy day, and suffice to say a good percentage of those visitors are not native Londoners. So it was really only a matter of time before the retail institution saw an opportunity to expand their high-end concept abroad. Fitting too that, after starting life as a small tea merchant in 1849, Harrods should see fit to begin said expansion with additional branches worldwide of their famous Tea Room. Now with five international outposts, from Kuala Lumpur to Tokyo, they have finally unveiled an elegant Georgian-styled, white-washed, green velvet and fern-filled rendition in Bangkok.

The shiny two-storey establishment seats 80 and provides all-day victuals such as truffle benedict, beef wellington, and fish & chips over a menu of 50 entrees and main courses, but what is really pulling in the punters is their impressive selection of classic English tea sets. The line-up – from buttered-up crumpets and light finger sandwiches, to soft treacle tart and Victoria sponge – is quintessentially British, but none more so than their signature raisin scones served with a jam, fresh clotted cream, and a worldly selection of premium teas. Meanwhile, a small Harrods Boutique downstairs offers an array of prettily-boxed tea, coffee, champagne and hampers, as well as the famous Harrods teddy bear. Fab for a mid-retail pick me up!
