Hello World!

March 03, 2014
Brave New World
Technology is a marvellous thing. Want to watch a clip of a panda sneezing over and over again? No problem. Want to profess your deepest thoughts to the world in 140 characters? Go ahead. But the bigger issues – how to cope with the less salubrious face of technology, how can we evolve at such an incessant pace while maintaining a grip on reality – are a different matter entirely. Probing these questions now is ‘Hello World!’, an exhibition held at the Thailand Creative & Design Centre (TCDC) that showcases current and upcoming design and technology trends, with a view to open dialogue on how they influence our lives.

In order to focus on trends and design directions, the curators and some artists have used both real and simulated design works from around the world, including a model of the gigantic rubber duck that sat (and eventually deflated) in Hong Kong’s Victoria harbour, an insight into New York’s promotional ‘I Love NY’ tourism campaign, a home genetics test, and an examination of the development of digital currency Bitcoin. The exhibition incorporates more than 60 items and is comprised of five sections: The Same but Different; Adopting with Adaptation; New Value from Old Things; New Answers to Old Problems; and A Unified World. Now if you can just manage to tear yourself away from that sneezing panda for a few hours… it’s well worth a visit!

Until March 23, 2014.
