Dumplings are the ultimate in Chinese comfort food – soft, gooey and packed with flavour. Composed of ingredients said to generate inner heat during the cold winter months, the dumpling may seem a simple delight, but the history, skill and expertise behind them elevates their making to a Chinese art form.
In this once-in-a-lifetime Peninsula experience, you will join our maestro of Canton cuisine, Chef Zhao, to learn how to create the perfect dumpling. From carefully choosing the best ingredients at the local market to mastering the intricate flavour combinations, Chef Zhao will be on hand throughout the day to mentor you in the finer tricks of the dumpling trade. The afternoon culminates in an exclusive four-course meal cooked by Chef Zhao served in our award-winning Huang Ting restaurant. And with the eating of dumplings, of course!
With a history of over 1,000 years, Chinese dumplings or jiaozi as they are known, are one of the most time-honoured dishes in Chinese cooking. Eaten for breakfast, lunch and dinner, this doughy staple of the local diet is generally vegetable or meat-filled, boiled, steamed or fried and dipped in soy-vinegar. Similar in texture to ravioli, jiaozi are traditionally one of the major foods of Chinese New Year and, as they are said to resemble the golden ingots used for money during the Ming Dynasty, serving them is believed to bring prosperity.
Your unique introduction to this ancient fare will begin with a chauffer-driven limousine visit to ‘Food Street’ (Hu Guo Si Da Jie) where you can fuel up on a typical Beijing breakfast of jian bing (savoury crepes). You will then absorb the sights and smells of the sixty-year-old Si Huan fresh market, accompanied by Chef Zhao, who will guide you through the array of authentic Asian ingredients to choose the freshest produce, spices and oils to create your own personalised take on the classic dumpling.
Your exclusive masterclass with Chef Zhao follows. Innovate: create your own dumpling house-special; craft them in the shape of flowers, birds, fish or insects. Whatever you fancy, Chef Zhao is there to guide you through the process. This culinary and cultural extravaganza culminates in a four-course lunch, personally created for you by Chef Zhao in our esteemed Huang Ting restaurant, which replicates the surroundings of an authentic Chinese noble home, where you can savour the fruits of your dumpling labour.
