Indulge in the ultimate Beijing itinerary. From aerial vistas of the Great Wall to private viewings at the city’s contemporary 798 Art Zone, this awe-inspiring Peninsula experience takes you on a remarkable ride through Beijing’s evolution from ancient capital to modern metropolis.
Many have trodden the pathways of the Great Wall, but few have seen its glory from the sky. This unrivalled adventure kicks off with a helicopter ride soaring high above the tourist queues, to watch the magnificent wall snake its way through the dramatic mountains and valleys of the Juyong Pass. From the luxury of your helicopter seat, you will take in aerial panoramas including the glorious Bird’s Nest Stadium – co-designed for the Olympics by artist and activist Ai Weiwei and so-called because of the numerous trussed steel columns giving it the resemblance of a bird’s nest – before touching down for an exquisite Champagne brunch on the Great Wall itself.
From the splendour of the past to the vibrancy of the present, you will be transported in a chauffeur-driven Rolls-Royce to Beijing’s contemporary 798 Art Zone, where you can browse works at your leisure and gain private access to a renowned artist’s gallery and open kitchen. Back at the hotel, you will be pampered in style at the Peninsula Spa in preparation for a six-course Peking Duck feast in our award-winning Huang Ting restaurant or in the privacy of your room. With superb pastries from our Michelin-starred dessert chef, Yannick Oppermann, to top it off, this is undoubtedly a Beijing journey to eclipse all others. The Great Wall just got Greater.
Beijing’s history dates back three millennia. The last of the four ancient capitals of China, between the wide streets and high-rise buildings of this now bustling supercity lie some early and modern artistic and cultural gems.
The Great Wall, just outside Beijing, is one the world’s must-see attractions. Started over 2000 years ago and rebuilt, maintained and enhanced throughout its life, this more than 13,000 mile-long fortification is imbued with historical and cultural significance along its path.
Accompanied by a historian who will reveal the wall’s lesser-known secrets, you will gain a breathtaking insight into this UNESCO World Heritage Site from both the ground and the air. The section you will visit at the Badaling Pass is particularly scenic, surrounded by beautiful landscape and is the perfect place to take your Peninsula Champagne Picnic, which will be served on a pavilion by a Peninsula Pageboy.
The 798 Art Zone epitomises modern Beijing as a hub of international arts and culture. Located in the Dashanzi area to the northeast of the city, it is the site of former state-owned factories including Factory 798, which originally produced electronics. In 2002, artists and cultural organisations moved in and developed the factory spaces into galleries, studios, design houses, restaurants and bars. Your close-up look at 798 will include taking Peninsula Afternoon Tea served in an artist’s gallery, where you can browse or buy your own modern Chinese masterpiece. Luxury spa treatments and a six-course East meets West fusion feast in the authentic surroundings of a Chinese noble home, the Huang Ting restaurant, follow back at the hotel.
