The Contemporary Fix

Navigating the Tokyo retail landscape is an adventure unique to this sprawling metropolis; no other city is filled with shopportunity quite so diverse, with iconically kawaii Japanese shops, multi-level luxury department stores, and tucked-away vintage boltholes all in the same neighbourhood.

You could spend days pinballing your way around Aoyama alone, but if domestic, of-the-moment men’s fashion is what you’re after, then discovering The Contemporary Fix is like hitting the sartorial jackpot.

Envisioned by creative director and buyer Yuichi Yoshii (founder of the renowned Loveless boutique), The Contemporary Fix occupies a bi-level, gallery-like space, minimally decorated but stocked to the gills with a selection of contemporary and avant-garde mostly-local brands, including the punk-inspired Mastermind Japan, futuristic-chic SASQUATCHfabrix, and cult streetwear brand Phenomenon, to name but a few.

Currently occupying the second-floor shelves are herringbone rider jackets by Mr. Gentleman, tartan down vests by Facetasm, and printed brogues from Steam and Thread, while the downstairs level is home to a charming café and bar, ideal for a post-shopping tipple. Ask for the Tokyo Designer’s Cocktail menu, offering a concoction named after each of the major labels stocked here – we particularly like the Facetasm, a take on the citrus mojito. Shop and sip!

The deeply ingrained and exquisite design aesthetic that permeates Tokyo is just one facet of this brilliantly glittering and vast city, at once profoundly traditional and wildly unconventional, fabulous in equal measure. It’s one giant, jolting culture shock and stylish surprise that’s not to be missed.
