Breakfast: Best Meal Of The Day
The name Sarabeth Levine may not ring a bell to Europeans and neither, up until recently, to Tokyoites, but to New Yorkers she’s affectionately known as the ‘Queen of Breakfast’, famed as much for her honest-to-goodness American classic dishes as she is for her secret family recipe fruit spreads (the recipe handed down since 1780, no less). Since opening their first bakery on NYC’s Amsterdam Avenue in 1981, the Sarabeth brand has grown to include ten outlets, as well as a dedicated jam factory, and in 2012 the first Sarabeth’s in Asia, in Tokyo’s Shinjuku district. So successful has the formula been, and so devoted have the city’s residents become to the house signature Eggs Benedict, that October 2013 saw the launch of a brand new branch in fashionable Daikanyama, complete with the classic all-day breakfast menu.
With its spic and span white walls and tables, caramel-coloured banquettes, and crisp, dove grey-attired staff, Sarabeth’s Daikanyama also boasts a small on-site retail space with mugs and totes and of course, signature fruit spread to go. Take your fill of lemon ricotta pancakes, fluffy french toast and farmer’s omelette as well as juices and coffee, but whatever you do, don’t forget to buy your pot of fruit spread on the way out!
