Milanese Ice-Cream Maestro
Chocolate and hazelnut and berry, oh my! And that’s just the start. The new Tokyo outpost of Milan’s much favoured ice-creamery Gelateria Marghera scoops out a tantalising daily selection from its 36 flavours, with several of them, like the subtle green tea matcha, unique to the Japanese market. And it’s not just cones and cups on offer, but a full complement of divine ice-cream biscuits as well as signature gelato and semifreddo dopocena desserts.
Complete with its cute pavement, shrub-lined, timbered deck with lime and tangerine-coloured plastic seats, it’s little wonder that eager Tokyoites have been queueing since the doors opened on Milanese Franco Pravettoni’s first store outside of his native home. The spic and span arctic white interior and staff clad in fresh green gingham shirts with black berets are the perfect foil to the luscious, exuberant colours of the gelati and sorbetti on rotational offer – you can’t miss the bright lampone (raspberry), arancia (orange), mango and fabulous fondente nero (dark chocolate), but don’t overlook the deliciously subtle shades of melone, pistacchio and ogura (red bean paste). With all the classic Italian flavours from caffé to stracciatella, limone, cocco and nocciolato to choose from, you’ll need more than a few visits to work your way through the entire menu – but what fun you’ll have trying. Get there lickety-split!
