Dover Street Market
Since their concept store debuted on London’s elegant Dover Street in 2004, Comme des Garçons’ designer Rei Kawakubo and her husband/CEO Adrian Joffe have changed the face of fashion retail with a to-die-for curation of ultra-desirable labels and a special emphasis on one-off collaborations and limited editions. Spread across 1200 sq metres and six floors, the flagship store became an instant hit among stylistas and a-fash-ionados alike, spawning a super-chic sister store in Tokyo in 2012 (as well as a New York outpost slated to open in late 2013). Situated in fashionable Ginza, the Tokyo shop (located in a long closed but famous department store) opened to a frenzy of interest with its new concrete and glass facade, concealing seven floors of fashion merchandising that lent itself more to art installation than to traditional fashion shopping.
Now, fresh from a recent refit, and complete with a strong Comme des Garçons showing as well as shoe, sunglasses and accessory spaces, the gallery-like store serves up a handsome edit of not only big names like Thom Browne, Celine, Balenciaga, Martin Margiela, Marni and Christopher Kane, but also bubbler-unders like Gosha Rubchinskiy, Aganovich, Fabio Quaranta, Jacquemus and Lena Lumelsky. Featured new spaces are taken by Florian, Sacai and Noir Kei Ninomiya amongst others, and look out for special editions from the likes of Louis Vuitton with their Chapman Brothers-designed 2013 Fall/Winter scarf, T-shirt and rug collection of richly detailed floral prints. If it all gets too much, head to the 7/F instore Rose Bakery for a well-earned cha.
