‘Digit’ store installation at Diesel Art Gallery by Yoshima Tsutsumi

Fresh and flushed with the success of winning the Japanese Commercial Environment Designers Association gold prize for his curve-roofed and polka-dot mirrored Anzas dance studio in his adopted home city Beijing, Japanese architect Yoshimasa Tsutsumi's latest challenge has been a collaborative store installation for the fashion giant at Tokyo’s Diesel Art
Gallery using lifestyle pieces from the latest ‘Successful Living’ Diesel Home collection.

Located in the Shibuya-based Cocoti Building, the installation plays on the concept of what it actually means to ‘show things’, and comprises 10,000 identical sets of tiny 4cm cardboard drawers, aligned into the walls of a room, and then selectively pushed inwards to create impressions and niches into which the Diesel home pieces are then placed and lit.

The effect is not unlike a series of giant versions of the pin-point impression desk toys popular in the 90s, and plays on the idea that walls should be flexible and plastic allowing everyday things to be embedded, rather than static, only allowing items to be hung on or displayed against them.

Featuring furniture designed in partnership with Moroso and lighting designed by Foscarini, the homeware range also includes textiles and bed linens by Zucchi, but the jury is out on whether Diesel will produce a collection of miniature clothes to place in the drawers!
