25th Tokyo International Film Festival

The largest film festival in Asia, with over 1,300 submitted entries and 300 films selected for competition, TIFF is well on its way to being recognised as one of the world’s top celebrations of celluloid along with Venice, Cannes and Berlin.

This year, the International Competition Jury deciding the winner of the festival’s top award, the Tokyo Sakura Grand Prix, is headed by Oscar-winning director/producer Roger Corman, while Hong Kong’s legendary Golden Harvest producer Raymond Chow will be presented with the prestigious TIFF Special Appreciation Award for his lifetime achievement of over 100 films including Enter the Dragon.

Held over nine days, the screenings fall into a unique range of categories from Special Screenings, to Japanese Eyes, to the popular, if unfortunately-named Winds of Asia-Middle East.

With a strong desire to promote eco credentials (all films are shown using ‘green’ power) the Natural TIFF category highlights films with environmental and humanist themes, while at the festival opening, VIPs and guests will be walking the green carpet in support of post-tsunami ecological initiatives.

Highlights this year include opening films Ridley Scott’s Japan In A Day and James Cameron’s Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away in 3D, while closing the festival will be Clint Eastwood’s Trouble with the Curve. If you’d like to walk the green carpet, tickets are available to all screenings online via Ticket Board and also via mobile phone at the TIFF site.

The deeply ingrained and exquisite design aesthetic that permeates Tokyo is just one facet of this brilliantly glittering and vast city, at once profoundly traditional and wildly unconventional, fabulous in equal measure. It’s one giant, jolting culture shock and stylish surprise that’s not to be missed.
