Rail and Subway

Tokyo boasts one of the most comprehensive city railway networks in the world, with lines operated JR(Japan Railways), Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway.

It is clean, efficient and not beholden to the traffic. The different lines are schematically colour coded. Simply obtain an English version of the railway network for easy navigation. However, all trains only operate up to midnight.  Please also be weary of extreme crowding during morning and evening rush hours.

Train tickets can be bought either at automated ticket machines or at ticketing counters at any stations. Single trip fares start at JPY160 for adults with children under 12 paying half price, under 6 is free. Stored valued tickets are also available for convenience.

For more information, please visit the Japan East, Tokyo Metro, or Toei Subway  websites or download the Tokyo Rail and Subway network map.

Taxi

Tokyo taxis are perhaps one of the cleanest and best maintained fleet in the world. Drivers are extremely polite and professional, however most do not speak English. Hence, it is crucial that any addresses are written in Japanese.  In addition, it is also common and easy for taxi drivers to get lost in unfamiliar territory, due to the complicated Japanese address naming system.

Taxi fares begins at JPY 710 for the first 2 kilometres; and JPY 90 for every 288 metres. Also a 30% surcharge applies for travel between 11:00 pm and 5:00 am. Tips are not expected.
