Mad For Med
Given the enormous success of his eponymous restaurant El Willy’s, Willy Trullas Moreno’s name alone has been sufficient to ensure crowds of Shanghai’s enthusiastic foodies and diners flock to seemingly whatever he turns his hand to, whether it be hotdogs at latenight nibble den Bikini, or chic sips at El Coctel. But with the move of El Willy’s to new Bund premises, the stage was set for more Moreno magic in the old, spacious Donghu Lu manse, and the wait has been worth it with the arrival of Mediterranean diner and deli elEFANTE.
With a huge menu of 100+ small plates and tapas, plus recipes and ingredients hailing from Spain, Italy, France, Greece, Turkey and Morocco, Moreno deftly keeps his foot on the tried and trusted success pedal while updating it with new twists, like the delectable, smoky sous vide shortrib, the unctuous burrata salad, and a sinful Croque Monsieur that melds fontina and mortadella with truffle. The original interior has been spruced while still retaining its stylish ‘warehouse’ windows, warm wood floors and brick arches, the much-loved patio looks chic with its smart umbrellas, and the new, cute, stacked-to-the ceiling Spanish deli (open throughout the day in case of a snack attack) means you can take home many of the jet-fresh goodies that you’ve tasted on the menu. ¡Olé!
