Napa Wine Bar & Kitchen
A change is as good as a holiday, especially when the change in question involves Shanghai’s terroir-centric ‘fine winer’ Napa Wine Bar & Kitchen and its recent move from a People’s Square villa to elegant new Bund 22 digs. After 6 successful years in its beautiful former residence, Napa has re-launched in a sleek contemporary space overlooking the Huangpu, with a 100-seat dining room and central show bar highlighting the tastes of the celebrated wine region, both in the glass and on the plate, though naturally peppered with welcomed local inflections.
Though its flavours are of the rustic country born, Napa’s polished-wood floors, bright arched windows, pristine cream furniture and handsome bar offer a more modern, metro take on its namesake’s traditional design aesthetic. Two private rooms, a chef’s table of 12 and balcony offer seating to suit all parties and occasions, while chef Patrick Dang’s delightful menu features the unusual (parsnip ‘porridge’ with morel, porcini, tete de moine, pistachio), the accessible (KFQ – Kentucky fried quail with ranchero sauce) and the sublime (Carbonara 2013 with cuttlefish shaving, sea urchin, dashi, yuzu juice). A 300 bottle-strong cellar just off the dining room floor references not just Napa-based producers, but many top-shelf names from around the globe, while a 350sqm downstairs cellar offers collectors and enthusiasts prime real estate in one of the city’s largest subterranean vaults. Here’s to new beginnings!
