Thai Time, Shanghai!
As we’ve lamented on more than one occasion previously, locating well-executed Thai cuisine in Shanghai can often be a lengthy affair fraught with disappointment. But for those still ever-hopefully seeking an elevated Siamese flavour kick, salvation is nigh thanks to the arrival of Toffy, a charming tri-level dining room melding sophisticated looks and vibrant, classic plates with an expansive, breezy terrace perched amid the leafy treetops of Shaanxi Lu.
Thankfully, Toffy eschews the novelty décor overload and instead balances quietly elegant European furniture with Eastern antique and trinkety accents, plus a generous dappling of dim light on the second floor and sunlight on the third. The menu doesn’t seek to reinvent the wheel; the focus remains firmly on traditional, crowd-pleasing favourites like spicy papaya and pomelo salads, chewy, hot and sour pork neck, curries of varying colour, content and intensity, and of course the all-important Pad Thai – one of the better iterations to be found in the city. Be sure to pay careful attention to the spice indicators next to each dish – the chefs aren’t known for toning the chili down for less experienced palates, and be sure to have a cooling coconut sago cake dessert at the ready.
