Baubles Out Back
The Back Room
Though its name conjures images of an untoward, hidden away parlour in which nefarious deals are struck, Shanghai’s The Back Room is in fact the light-filled, airy, street-fronting vintage-meets-mod boutique launched this past summer by French magazine Numéro’s Chinese fashion editor, Tang ‘TS’ Shuang. The elegant salon’s creamy white walls and polished-wood floorboards are adorned with side-by-side vintage cabinets and shelving; every surface glittering with the store’s expertly-curated, internationally-sourced cache of trinkets, jewellery and accessories.
For the home, there are quirky porcelain tea sets from Brit label Melody Rose, nature-inspired brass ornaments, taxidermy birds, cast-iron deer antlers, Kinto ceramics, Astier de Villatte scented candles and custom artwork. For the person, old meets new with reworked vintage costume jewellery pieces, necklaces and watches sharing the spotlight with Hong Kong label Oblivion’s saucy leather harnesses, and white resin collars and animal pendants by Taiwan’s Hao Shi. Gents are not forgotten – neck-cessories by bow-tie boffin Alfred Julius are sure to keep him entertained, and Marie Turnor’s imitation lunch-sack clutches keep any ladies outfit on-trend and casual-cool. Plus. keep your peepers peeled for special events, art shows and pop-ups in The Back Room’s, well, back room.
