Sips In The City
Specialty spirits, an elegant setting, and a sophisticated ambience have set the tone for chic new two-tiered bar The Lab as one of Shanghai’s most stylish bars of 2013. Opened in January with an elegant interior designed by Luk Studio creative director Christina Luk, this low-lit watering hole abounds in leather and dark wood, with a glowing bar that treats the eye and the taste buds with bottle upon bottle of their amber signatures whisky and bourbon. Seek the advice of Taiwanese bar manager Allen Hsu Chin in selecting your blend, or if you’re an aficionado, peruse the long libation list that reads like a Scotch-drinker’s dream, with twelve pages of single malts like decade-old Ardberg Islay, and countless globe-spanning bourbons that range from Kentucky’s Old Fitzgerald to a twelve-year bottle of Japanese favourite Hakashu.
Alternatively, opt for beer, wine or one of Chin’s Asian-inspired cocktails, like his take on the warming Spanish favourite, sangria. Monikered the Red Blood, this heady concoction of Grand Marnier, gin, red wine, lemon juice and sugar is The Lab’s must-try, while the Path To Autumn is a fruity mix of Prucia plum liqueur, Suntory whisky, passion fruit syrup and grapefruit bitters. Too heavy? Then try the subtler flavour of the Pansy with apricot brandy, delicate elderflower syrup and lime juice. Chin chin!
