Take in an Evolution-Inspired Stage Show
Era: Intersection of time
Though you’re bound to have your hands full with Shanghai’s fabulous food, excellent shopping and luxurious spas, be sure to make time in your holiday schedule to take in a performance by the Cirque du Soleil of the east, Shanghai’s Era: Intersection of time. Combining ancient Chinese arts and culture with modern technical wizardry, Era takes audiences on an awe-inspiring journey through Chinese evolution.
While you marvel at the skills of the performers – world-class acrobats, daredevils, martial artists and dancers – the story of past, present and future China is told. The 100-minute spectacular depicts ancient Chinese soothsaying and conjuring, the country’s porcelain culture dating back to the Han Dynasty, and modern day achievements such as China’s first manned space mission. There’s also jar juggling, chair towers, trampolines and ‘space motorcycles’. Fabulous costumes, lighting, sound effects and live music scored by composer Michael Cusson all add to the spectacle, and transport you back – and forward – in time.
And afterwards, treat yourself to a further shot of nostalgia by taking the short taxi ride to the charming, old-style Chinese parlour Restaurant 1931, with its heavy drapes and floral chintz wallpaper for old-fashioned lamb pancakes and fried dumplings – it’s more about the ambience than the food, but you’re assured of a very Shanghai, night out.
