Spin Ceramics
With China’s emergence as one of the manufacturing hubs of the world, and Shanghai its shining beacon of retail worship, there’s certainly no shortage of myriad wares to sate the most diverse shopping palates, particularly where the saturated market of ceramics is concerned.
But if your tastes tend more towards the refined and artisan than the mass-produced and often downright garish, Spin Ceramics is the one-stop shop for elegant, locally-produced tableware, that thankfully remains a well-kept secret among in-the-know local expats and savvy, clued-in visitors.
The subtle colour palette of whites, stones and granites, and clean, contemporary lines of Spin’s timeless tea-sets, plates, vases, chopstick rests and bowls are dreamed up by a small team of craftsmen and designers led by art director Gary Wang, then produced from moulds in China’s ancient porcelain capital, Jingdezhen.
New products are introduced every three months, but the painstaking life-cycle that sees concepts realised as finished designs on the shelf can take up to an entire year. The result – a delicate range of high-quality ceramics featuring rare finishes like Under-Glaze Red, which is only achieved using extremely rigid temperature controls during the firing process.
Despite the exceptional product, the vast majority of Spin goods remain very reasonably priced, such as the popular modern cream-and-chocolate Magpie Teaset comprising a RMB500 pot and cups at RMB50 each. Glam cerams for a steal – count us in!
