Read It And Eat!
Shanghai International Literary Festival, 1-17 March
From its humble beginnings in 2003, when restaurateur Michelle Garnaut, lecturer and historian Jenny Laing Peach and journalist Tina Kanagaratnam staged the first gathering, the Shanghai International Literary Festival has flourished to become China’s premiere English-language literary event, this year featuring no less than 71 writers from 21 countries spread over 17 days.
With guest speakers that have ranged from Gore Vidal to National Book Award and Man Booker Prize winners, the extensive schedule includes not only talks and interviews, but interactive forums, writing workshops and literary lunches covering a vast array of subjects from fiction to journalism, poetry, travel and children’s writing.
Highlights this year include renowned US pastry chef Nick Malgieri speaking about his life in dough as well as giving a hands-on demonstration; biographer, critic, broadcaster and novelist Victoria Glendinning CBE on Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, founder of Singapore; Philip Eisenbeiss on the extraordinary story of bel canto impresario Domenico Barbaja; Master of Wine Jeannie Cho Lee on Writing, Wine & Life; and Finnish crimewriter Leena Lehtolainen on crime-solving women. With all the events held at M on the Bund and The Glamour Bar there will be no shortage of fine food and wine, with a range of lunchboxes, brunches, afternoon teas and early suppers planned throughout. Read it and eat!
