PilingPalang

With a prestigious Elle Décor 2011 design award tucked under their belt, PILINGPALANG designers Judy Kim and Deng BingBing solidified their status as a frontrunner in the ceramics industry and, another milestone reached, opened up shop earlier this year in one of the labyrinthine alleyways making up Shanghai’s artsy Tianzifang. The first brick and mortar home for PILINGPALANG, the small space is every bit as bright and colourful as the brand itself, with pastel and printed products lining the glossy white shelves, and floor-to-ceiling windows inviting onlookers in.

With their 2010 collection debut at the renowned Maison&Objet Paris, Kim and Deng’s range of ceramic, lacquer, and cloisonné objects has always been handmade and inspired by Oriental symbolism, with key motifs like lanterns, Chinese drums, and gingko leaves influencing pattern and form of classic items like teapots and snuff boxes. But with PILINGPALANG’s commitment to quality from creation to delivery, the result is conversation-starter everyday objects like cloisonné Tiffin stacks, geometric-printed tableware, and colourful ceramic vases with painted caricatures originally sketched by Deng at the ripe age of 8. And with infinite inspirations pulled from centuries of history and creative renditions of classic themes, these objects also make exquisite gifts for the upcoming holiday season. Home is where the art is!

At once futuristic and historic, Shanghai is a financial and cultural powerhouse, a stunning, space-age metropolis that’s home to more than 20 million people. Add its breathtaking skyline, burgeoning art and design scene, excellent dining and happening nightlife, and you’ve got the city of tomorrow, today.
