Peony Rice

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that an outfit is not an outfit until it’s accessorised, and nobody knows that better than designer Pauline Cheung. Having developed her style in the heady studios of fashion doyennes Donna Karan and Anna Sui, Cheung then turned her attention to millinery and subsequently launched her own company Peony Rice in Shanghai.

Initially specialising in what she calls ‘Head Toppings’, Cheung developed a successful series of vintage-inspired, quirky and singular fascinators, headbands and hairpins using silk, lace and ribbon.

With all materials responsibly-sourced through initiatives with local SE Asian communities, it wasn’t long before customers started to ask for garments. The result is not only a line of cocktail and evening dresses, but most recently an elegant collection of made-to-order bridal wear, the designs for which can be altered, adapted and tailored to suit. With a clear retro influence, the draped goddess gowns employ an ultra-feminine range of fabrics, from hand-pleated crinkle silk chiffon and crepe de Chine, to hand-scissored raw silk organza and silk charmeuse. And with the production workshop conveniently located next to the showroom studio, dresses can be ready in as little as 4-6 weeks. Needless to say you won’t have far to go for the veil!

At once futuristic and historic, Shanghai is a financial and cultural powerhouse, a stunning, space-age metropolis that’s home to more than 20 million people. Add its breathtaking skyline, burgeoning art and design scene, excellent dining and happening nightlife, and you’ve got the city of tomorrow, today.
