Shanghai Gets A Sugar Hit

Papabubble

When you think of Barcelona’s cuisine, it’s probably Ibérico ham, spicy chorizo, or marinated olives that first spring to mind, but since 2004 there’s been an even sweeter international export emanating from Catalonia. Papabubble’s artisan candies have been making quite a name for themselves across Europe, North and South America and Asia, and as of July this year Shanghai sugar rushes have reached an all-time high with the opening of the city’s first branch-slash-lollie-laboratory on Julu Lu.

An avid sweet-tooth and Papabubble devotee, store owner and Taiwan-native Jane Hau originally wrote to the company begging them to allow her to bring the rainbow-hued hard candies to the Chinese market. Luckily for Jane, and Shanghai’s dental industry, the powers that be agreed, and locals can now sample the handcrafted pillow, rock and lollipop-shaped goods in myriad sizes and more than 30 natural fruity flavours including apple, lemon tea and peach. Papabubble will even customise their products for you or your business, so there’s never been a better reason to say it with sweets. If you have children in tow, plan to visit on Saturday or Sunday around 11am or 4pm when the team give candy-art performances. Sweet dreams!

At once futuristic and historic, Shanghai is a financial and cultural powerhouse, a stunning, space-age metropolis that’s home to more than 20 million people. Add its breathtaking skyline, burgeoning art and design scene, excellent dining and happening nightlife, and you’ve got the city of tomorrow, today.
